Have you ever struggled reading or studying the Bible? I know there are times that I have struggled in that area. The one thing that is constant, is that if I am just reading for the sake of reading, then it gets really tedious. You can still find great insights, but it can be laborious.

If I open God’s Word with a purpose, then it is much more rewarding. When I go in with the mind set of wanting to find something, then the task is more focused and I am more watchful of potential “nuggets” that I am seeking out.

minecraft_mineIn Minecraft, you dig into the “earth” using various tools, depending on the item you are digging. You are seeking out various elements from coal to gold to use to craft other materials you need for your journey.

The mines can be elaborate, or boring, but the one thing that is a necessity is light (torches) so you can see your way.

Transfer this into seeking after wisdom. In Proverbs 2:1-5 we read:

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, listening closely[a] to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding; furthermore, if you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.

The purpose of mining is to search for the hidden treasure and then using it along our journey.

The purpose of reading/studying God’s Word is to find wisdom, treasure, that we can use to become more like Jesus, things to use along our journey.

The light is the truth of the Word (Jesus and the Holy Spirit) helping us see and understand the Truth of His Word.

Encourage your children to search for treasures in the Bible as they dig into His Word. Just as they search for treasures in the mines.
